Haematology

Haematology is the branch of medicine concerned with preventing, diagnosing and treating diseases that affect the production of blood and its components, such as blood cells, platelets, haemoglobin, blood proteins, bone marrow, blood vessels, as well as diagnosing and treating diseases that impair the development of functional lymphoid tissues and spleen.

Diseases belonging to this field might include benign disorders such as haemophilia and other bleeding disorders, thrombophilia, anaemias, including haemoglobinopathies, thrombocytopenia, but also blood cancers such as leukaemia, chronic myeloproliferative syndromes, multiple myeloma, malignant lymphoma (Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin) and myelodysplasia. The laboratory work that goes into the study of blood offered by our centre uses up to date molecular and immunological techniques and classical clinical chemistry methods.
